Pee Pads for Training Your Dog or Puppy

Congratulations, you got a new dog or puppy! And now that you have your dog at home, it’s time to get started with potty training your pup.

Using pee pads as part of your potty training is one of the best ways to help teach your dog to go pee and poop outside. In this article we give you basic tips on training your dogs to use pee pads aka as wee pads. Below are some tips to help you in this process, and they include:

1. Choose a training spot for your dog pee pads

Pick a place such as a bathroom or laundry area that is easy for your dog to access, and, that is also visible to you. This way your dog feel comfortable when going there and keeping the pee pad in the same spot will help to build routine.

Also spots as mentioned above typically have linnoleum or tile. This way if there is an accident it will be easier to clean up.

2. Use a separate area for each dog

If you have two or more dogs that you are potty training, then you can make allocate a separate compartment for each dog. By doing this you are helping your dog with routine and he will learn not to confuse his pee odour ‘scent’. This way, you will also be able to track how your potty training efforts.

3. Supervise the dog while he uses the pad

Dogs don’t know what are pee pads for.  When first presented with them he may consider it as a  blaket or toy. To help him understand its intended purpose, if he picks it up theh take if off him, say no and then place him on the pad.  If he doesn’t go potty then repeat the process every hour or so. In time you will learn his language and notice what he is trying to communicate.

4. Use positive reinforcement

Dogs love praise. If your dog uses the pee pad, say, “good job” when he finishes. Positive reinforcements may sound little, but they have huge impacts on the behaviors of your dog. Get excited, pet your dog when he takes a pee on his pad. This way he knows he’s done a good job.

5. Pick a ‘word’ for teaching your dog to use pee pads

It goes without saying that the pick of my word ‘pee pee time’ is obvious. But it works, I say it in a fun voice like its the best thing! When I say pee pee time my dogs jump up and readily run to go and do their business.

This is the exact word I use when starting with pee pads. As puppies I say pee time and stand them on the pad. When they go pee or poop I say yeah! pee pee’s.

This way they associate the word when you are transitioning from using pee pads in the house to going outside. You can pick any word that you like, it doesn’t have to have anything to do with a dog’s bathroom break. It simply using an anchor word that you use and your dog will associate with potty time.

6. Visit your vet if your dog won’t go outside

If your dog is just not peeing, pooping or both, then it’s time to  talk to your veterinary to be on the safe side. A vet will help to rule out physical issues such as a bladder infection, and discuss any such emotional reasons.

7. Reward with treats

Who doesn’t love treats? Dogs enjoy treats as much as their humans. We all know how we feel when some one who cares for us give a special reward. So whether he pee’s outside or uses the pad for it’s purpose then reward your dog with a small treat.
